Kennel Assistant & Dog Walking Volunteer
This volunteer role at Danaher Animal Home will provide vital support to the kennel staff. It is an excellent opportunity to gain practical and theoretical knowledge of animal behaviour and training, and a chance to apply, learn and expand a wide range of skills. This is an essential role at the Home, which will make a difference to the lives of the hundreds of dogs who pass through our doors each year and help them in their journey to reach their new home.

Role Purpose
To assist animal care assistant staff in cleaning, feeding, walking and animal husbandry
Main Activities/Tasks
Assist with Cleaning, feeding and run rotation
Adhere to walking charts and volunteer grading
Ensure walking equipment is fitted correctly
Remove dogs from kennels in a confident and controlled manner
Walk all dogs on two leads (one must be a slip lead)
Ensure dogs are walked on defined routes
Ensure poo bags are used to collect dog waste
Ensure kennels are clean and dry before putting a dog back
Ensure dog is dry before putting it back in the kennel
Ensure water bowls are always full
Assisting with animal husbandry, including kennel enrichment
Reporting any health or behaviour observations
Carrying out relevant additional duties as required
Experience/Skills/Knowledge required
Experience of handling dogs, and a confident and sensible approach to animals
A flexible approach to work and ability to take instruction
Adhering to the policies of Danaher Animal Home
Excellent communication, teamwork and organisational skills
Ability to be self-
Good verbal and written communication skills
Ability to show empathy and understanding when dealing with others
A strong interest in animal welfare, and an empathy and understanding of animals within a rescue environment
Support and training provided
Health and Safety training will be given by the Volunteer Coordinator as part of an induction programme, support and instruction will be provide by the animal care assistant team and experienced volunteers.
Location
Volunteering will take place in the Kennels at RSPCA Danaher Animal Home, Thorley Farm, Hedingham Road, Wethersfield North Braintree, Essex, CM7 4EQ
Additional Information
Volunteers will need to:-
Attend a scheduled induction -
Attend and actively participate in a training workshop
Once the above has been completed, volunteers will be assessed and advised if they are able to walk dogs
Volunteers will then be advised which colour grade of dogs they are permitted to walk
Purchase a slip lead with a secure locking device which is to be used at all times along with any other walking equipment deemed appropriate by Danaher
Purchase at least a Polo T Shirt and ensure its worn at all times while on site
Wear provided PPE as necessary e.g High Viz, ear defenders
