Story
Mona is a beautiful two-year-old Mastiff who has sadly found herself back in our care through absolutely no fault of her own. She is the very definition of a gentle giant, and we are determined to help her find the loving, understanding home she deserves.
When Mona first arrived with us, she was a shell of herself. Nervous and withdrawn, she needed time, patience and plenty of gentle encouragement to understand that she was safe. Slowly but surely, Mona began to find her confidence. She formed strong bonds with her handlers, came right out of her shell and has continued to blossom every single day.
And what a joy it has been to watch!
Once Mona feels comfortable, her personality really shines. She has an exuberant, wonderfully goofy, puppy-like energy that will bring a smile to anyone's face. She reminds us of Bambi as she dances around with her long limbs flailing, throwing her toys around and simply enjoying life to the fullest. ❤️
Mona walks beautifully on the lead, although, as you would expect from a dog of her size, she can be strong. Her adopters will therefore need to be confident and comfortable handling a large, bouncy dog.
Like many of the bull breeds, Mona can become overexcited and may mouth when she is particularly excited. The wonderful thing about Mona is just how receptive she is to training. She is incredibly food motivated, beautifully focused on her handler and genuinely eager to learn, making training with her an absolute pleasure.
Because of her exuberance, we feel Mona would be best suited to a home with children aged 15 years and over. This is always subject to staff discretion, however, and younger children may be considered depending on their age, experience and understanding around large dogs.
Mona can be a little timid when faced with new people or unfamiliar environments, but she continues to show us incredible bravery and resilience. Every new experience is another opportunity for her to grow in confidence, and she has already come such a long way.
Mona also has a lovely social side when it comes to other dogs. She enjoys their company, although she's still learning how to play! Thankfully, she is learning with the help of her canine friends and continues to make progress. Mona could potentially live with another dog, subject to successful meets at the centre. Mona's future family will need to be prepared to visit her for several meets so that she can build a relationship with them at her own pace.
Behind the nervous beginnings is a big-hearted, funny, affectionate and wonderfully goofy girl who has so much love and life to give. Mona has already shown us just how much she can blossom when someone believes in her. Now she needs a family who will continue that journey with her.
