Danaher Animal Home at Wethersfield, near Braintree, has been chosen as a charity partner by online specialist bookseller We Buy Books.
The move is a big win for Danaher as it means anyone wanting to sell a book can now do so directly via the We Buy Books website, simply clicking a button to donate the money to the charity.
At the same time, unwanted books brought into its charity shops are scanned by Danaher staff and sold via the bookseller’s website.
Julia Askam, head of retail for Danaher Animal Home, explains: "Whether people choose to sell directly their books directly or bring them into one of our six shops, they can help raise funds for Danaher."
"With continually rising costs we are having to be more inventive in the way we raise funds and discovering that we could quadruple the amount of money raised by working with We Buy Books has been a real gamechanger."
As a regular seller with a high number of books, Julia now gains an extra percentage on each sale and is also allowed to sell multiple copies of the same book.
Usually Danaher’s shops sell books for around 50p a time but by sorting and scanning the book donations and working with We Buy Books, it is achieving an average of £2 per book and sometimes even more – raising nearly £7,000 to date.
Now an online donation button has been added to the We Buy Books website, it means that even without leaving home people can help the charity. All they have to do is scan, or manually enter, the book’s barcode or ISBN number for a valuation. Once accepted, a free postage label is provided.
Huw Evans from We Buy Books, said: “We are delighted to have partnered with Danaher and help them raise money for animals in need. So many households have books that they no longer want, so this is an easy way to turn them into cash which they can then donate to Danaher at the touch of a button via our charity dropdown list.”
So far the money raised has been spent on kitting out the Home’s newly-built extra large kennels, making them as comfortable as possible for the increasing number of larger dogs now arriving.
Further funds will go towards new all-weather dog agility equipment and enrichment toys for the increasing number of cats arriving at the centre.

Handmade snuffle/foraging mats are now available to purchase from our pet supplies shop at the Danaher Animal Home and can also be bought through any of our charity shops by prior arrangement.
Foraging is a natural behaviour and fun for animals. It provides mental stimulation and slows down speedy eaters! Sniffing is rewarding, mentally tiring, and reduces stress and anxiety. Snuffle mats can be used to help calm, relax, distract animals, and as a boredom buster.
Snuffle mats are used within the centre by our dogs, cats, and small animals. They are popular with adopters and many of our rehomed animals have gone home with one.
The mats are machine washable at 30 degrees and come with an instruction leaflet.

We just wanted to say a big thank you to all those that attended our Fun Dog Walk event recently.
After two years of being unable to hold the event due to Covid, it was great to see so many people (and their dogs) again, both familiar and new faces, come out and support us.
The event was a huge success, raising almost £500!! As an independent charity, your kind donations will be used to help many more animals find their new forever loving homes.
We hope you and your dogs enjoyed your walk around the sunny Wethersfield countryside and we will see you again at Blackmore End on Sunday 24th July for our annual Fun Day!
